About the Project
A project to reinstate more natural flooding to a large area of the Koondrook-Perricoota Forest is underway. The project is part of The Living Murray (TLM) program – a joint initiative funded by the New South Wales, Victorian, South Australian, Australian Capital Territory and the Commonwealth governments, coordinated by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority. A suite of works, including a channel connecting the Torrumbarry weir pool to the natural drainage system within the forest, will allow the forest to receive more regular flooding, sustaining natural processes, rehabilitating wetlands and once more providing a variety of habitat. The works commenced in February 2011 and has been delayed by flooding. It is anticipated to be completed by the end of winter 2012. The Project - along with the proposal for Gunbower Forest on the Victorian side of the Murray River - will help ensure the Gunbower-Koondrook-Perricoota Forest remains a vital part of the region for both the community and the native flora and fauna that depend on it.
